while there’s plenty of summer activities we’re cut off from this summer, we can still take pleasure in barbecue season.
like most activities involving an open flame, there’s a few things to keep in mind regarding safety. in 2018, the canadian federal government created a
web page for bbq safety tips.
one of the topics covered is what to check when you use your barbeque for the first time after the winter. it’s important to check for a few things before you use it since it’s been sitting all winter such as blocked burners, grease buildups, damaged or leaking fittings, hoses or seals.
the page includes instructions for turning your barbeque on properly, noting that you shouldn’t lean over the barbecue while you light it, which is either patronizing or obvious advice, depending on your point of view.
the
canadian propane association
also has a pdf for bbq safety, reminding us not to throw water on the grill — as it will only spread the flame, to make sure you’re never grilling in an enclosed area, and that your propane tanks aren’t stored near sources of heat.
the way to find leaks is by “applying a 50/50 solution of water and dish soap to propane
cylinder connections and hoses. if bubbles appear, tighten the connection and/or replace the damaged parts and retest. never use matches or lighters to check for leaks. if you have concerns about a leak, contact a qualified service technician.”
