the woman, who identified her daughter as “mary doe,” refused to turn over mary’s medical records and went to court to try to stop the inquiry.
“we are terrified for mary’s health and well-being, and for our family. i feel betrayed by my state and the agency for whom i work,” she wrote in court documents. “not providing mary with the medically necessary health care that she needs is not an option for us.”
even trans people with supportive families and access to care face high levels of discrimination and violence. but people whose gender identity is rejected and who are forced to undergo gender identity conversion efforts — essentially, people who forced not to identify as trans — face severe mental health consequences, as well. according to a 2019 study, trans adults who were forced to go through gender identity conversion efforts before they were 10 had a “significantly” higher chance of attempting suicide.
the importance of valid care for kids of all gender identities
while detransition is rare, it is something it’s helpful for doctors to understand, the new study states: “understanding retransitions is crucial for clinicians and families to help make them as smooth as possible for youth.”
but understanding how to provide affirming healthcare to transgender children is crucial, given that that’s a much larger number. more than 100,000 canadians identify as trans or non-binary, according to census data that came out in late april.
