occupational therapists can help by providing low-cost, high-impact solutions to many physical and mental-health-related issues, preventing issues before they occur and developing work wellness programs and practices. occupational therapy services can further reduce employee absenteeism, increase employee productivity and enhance employee well-being and quality of life.
canadians deserve access to high-quality mental health support and services, whether that be in community settings or through their workplace benefits. there is a need to increase the limits for mental health care while expanding the range of practitioners, including occupational therapists, covered under benefit plans. canadians are encouraged to advocate to their employers and insurance companies to include occupational therapy services within their extended health benefits plans.
in addition, to manage the scale of current and post-pandemic mental health needs, all regulated health professionals, including ots and otas, must be recognized for their full scope of practice to support a safer, healthier future for all canadians.
