last week’s decision does not affect canadians, but protesters expressed concern and, in some cases, rage that people in the u.s. will have trouble accessing services they need. with the supreme court decision, “all women in the world are being attacked,” one speaker said.
organized by the fédération du québec pour le planning des naissances (fqpn) and a few other organizations for people to express publicly their anger “at the state-sanctioned control of the bodies and lives of women, trans men and non-binary folks in the united states, and to make visible your solidarity with these people now forced to reproduce.”
events were organized sunday afternoon at other courthouses in the province, including quebec city, sherbrooke and trois-rivières. another protest took place in halifax.
for caro dupeyras, friday’s supreme court decision represented “a giant step backward.”
laurence raynault-rioux, co-coordinator of the fqpn, called the decision “revolting,” although she acknowledges it did not surprise her and that she sees it as a sign of a general move toward the political right.
